New Protagonist for Super Space Trooper

Throughout my time creating Super Space Trooper, I’ve had a few comments from various people that felt the protagonist of the game was lacking.  I also felt the same thing, and I’ve also been meaning to update the homepage of this website with a more current image.  To do that, it only made sense to take the time and finally revise and update the look of the player’s ship.

Besides just remodeling the player in Blender, I’ve also added in some colour to the texturing in Photoshop to bring it to life and give the player’s ship more of a personality.

The first step was to put together some reference images that I would use to model the ship.  I then built it out within Blender 3D.  That was followed by setting up the UV maps for the mesh’s texture.  I then created three textures within Photoshop.  The first is the colour and pattern of the ship.  The second is the bump map (Unity uses the Alpha channel of the first texture for this), and the third is the reflectivity of the ship.

From the start of gathering the reference images to the final ship in Unity, it took me about 7 or 8 days to complete.  My hope is that I will not need to come back and recreate this again in the future and that it will hold up in quality by the time I finish developing the video game.
